Just as the title states, I have an opportunity to lead a software billing project for the a major telecommunication company. I have a background in leading aircraft/aviation projects for the Air Force. I have also led an off-the-shelf software implementation, which was an incredible learning experience, but never in telecommunications. Does anybody have any experience in leading an integration between billing platforms, or the telecommunications industry? And if so, I would greatly appreciate any insight or references to links. Thanks!

Is this a project management question or a technical question?

The reason I asked because I cannot see much of a difference in the project management process among the different types of projects that you mentioned. The uniqueness is in the technical details

Mounir,

This is about the technical challenges dealing with integration in the telecommunications industry. For instance, are there any challenges such as data migration prevalent in the telecom arena?

Shravan,

I have extensive experience in Telecom, started my career with premier Telecom R&D center of Govt of India, in an era when this sector was not open for today's ICT player of India. So in nutshell get opportunity to work with DoT, PSUs and incoming OEM in India over a period of time and got opportunity to see transformation in sector (billing solutions as well).

Primarily worked in DSS, GSM, GPRS stack development thereafter with change of time UMS, Lawful interception, OSS/BSS and CMS as well. In 2007 moved in to private sector (Indian MNC) wherein seen journey of VAS, beyond VAS and Digital transformation wherein seen billing and business solutions demand grown like anything.

You specifically mentioned billing platforms - what is your concern point? API framework, Charging billing engines or integration touch points in telecom?

Moreover most of Indian MNCs have billing solution

Thanks !

Project management is project management basically. Old legacy carrier billing systems are major dinosaurs, so if this is a updating of that, then you will have fun. Be sure to get really, really good requirements up front. Get really good SME's to help you.

Bob,
Thanks for the quick tip! How about a billing system integration resulting from a merger. The telecom company used to be two separate companies and is now merged and re-branded as a single new enterprise. What are some of the challenges to a PM in these situations?

I worked through some network integration projects resulting from mergers/acquisitions. As far as the billing systems go, what is the strategy going to be? Are you going to be migrating billing to one system or combining them? What billing platform is being anticipated to be used?

Shravan,

Integrating systems from a merger can be an interesting challenge, in telecom or any other industry.

Bob,
These sound like questions for me to ask while transitioning into the project. I still have not started on the project yet, but I wanted to be well prepared when I do start taking over the project.
