In your organization, do your IT project managers report to somebody who has a working knowledge of project management and has managed large projects in the past? Or is the person to whom the project managers report more focused on general management? What has worked well and what has not in either case? Saving Changes...
The PMO manager that I work for has managed projects in the past. But, more importantly, he knows the business inside out and has voluminous contacts. Whenever I have a question about who to talk to he knows where to go, or can make the contact for me. I value this ability more than any project management experience he might have. Though ideally a PM Manager will have both: 1. Intimate knowledge of the business; 2. Extensive Project Management experience. But, as a working PM, his business connections and knowledge help me out far more. If I could choose I would rather have a well-connected manager with no PM experience than a well-experienced PM with no business knowledge. Saving Changes...
