I am new to both Project Management profession and Gantt head discussion. Can someone highlight what can be the potential challenges in managing a application maintenance engagement where in each resource is expected to have responsibility for more than one application?
Specific areas could be - Work management, Resource Utilization, Productivity issues etc.

When you have multiple applications assigned to 1 resource, then it is also possible that more than resource are handling the same application (assuming the support effort for each application is 1 person-month for a month). In such cases, they work in a primary-secondary model i.e. 1 resource is primary and the other/s secondary.

To ensure that the secondary resource is trained and always up to the required knowledge level is a challenge. Generally it is seen that this is not implemented well and if the primary is not available for whatever reasons, the secondary has a tough challenge ensuring the level of support demanded by the service level agreement.

A good cross-training plan within the team would eliminate such issues.

There could be more reasons as to why a single resource is assinged responsibilities for more than one application in addition to the following:

1. There could be only one resource/person knows the details of various applications even there are many members available in that team. In this case, as Sameer pointed out, cross-training would definitely help.

2. Less resources/members on a team. In this case, management has to really step in and find out why a specific team is having less resources and add more resources to the team and allocate necessary time for the cross-training.
