I hadn't heard it packaged that way before. The McKinsey site introduces it - apparently, this is who packaged the idea:

It doesn't seem like anything new, but I like the emphasis on Nurturing New Business and Creating Genuinely New Business. Companies (and individuals) can get caught up in Maintaining and Defending their Core Business to the extent that they can't innovate. Finding a way to balance these areas (not evenly, just making sure each is addressed appropriately) is essential.
