Hello everyone. I am very new to project management, as a matter of fact am a student member of PMI. Along with my online course for PMP cert I would also like to take a course on a good Project Management Software, can anyone recommend one?

Thank you very much for your kind advice.

MS Project is good choice for you to learn concept of scheduling & monitoring projects. Later as soon as you master concept may switch to Primavera.

If you are picking up scheduling and planning you might like to try Planner from PROJECT in a box, it does 80% of what you find in most MS Project plans rather than 80% of the functionality of Project. It is therefore much easier to pick up than Project and it is totally free. You can import MS Project into it and also export to MS Project should you want to upgrade later. Unlike Project it also helps you with Risks and Issues key capabilities for an aspiring PM.

check out the Planner intro video on YouTube here:

In my opinion MS Project for Beginners and for expert users PRIMAVERA is the ultimate software,

Primavera is a widely used project management package in the construction field. However, it is a relatively costly product if you are not working in a company that is already using it. There is a lower cost, single user version of Primavera, called SureTrak, which will provide the new user a good idea of what Primavera is all about.

Another option is to check with Primavera on availability of a no-cost, limited time evaluation product, which might be good enough for self-education purposes.

I would recommend Primavera P6, if you can get access to it .

It very depends on different factor, such as your organization, clients, infrastructures , .... but if you want to learn for yourself Ms project is very suitable.

@Ronny and Mark Price-Perry: I do not publish any longer under the title "Dynamic Scheduling"; a variety of other authors have taken that title under their wing. I now publish under a new title called "Forecast Scheduling with Microsoft Project". Check it out at: www.ProejctProCorp.com !

You don't say what field you're working in (e.g. construction, IT deployment, new product development). I would look to PMs that are managing the kind of projects you'd like to be managing and ask them what they're using.

That being said, there are lots of cloud-based project management tools like GanttProject and LiquidPlanner that are easier to use than MS Project and more powerful (e.g. useful for building a WBS, Schedule, and for communications). They're also cheaper than Project.

Good luck

My advice would be to get a couple of years experience working as a Project co-ordinator/Junior PM somewhere and learning the key fundamentals of project management with hopefully some good mentors.

A great way to see all PPM Tools in one place is a convention/PPM Seminar as most of the vendors will no doubt want to show off their solutions to the PM/PMO Community.

It is also handy to be proficient in Microsoft Excel. While it is not a specific PM tool I find it very useful in many day to day PM activities.
