Is project management decision making influenced by the type of data visualization formats used in your organization?

The question is asked based on the following types of data visualization formats.
a) common standard formatting style (old ones, like sheets, tables, graphs, pictographs)
b) social media tools data visualization formatting styles (new ones, Netflix, Flipboard, Pinterest, Fantasy apps, NBA app, Uber app, App Store)

As a PM, how we communicate our recommendations is as important as what we are communicating - I've definitely witnessed good recommendations being ignored or rejected because the medium and format did not meet the decision maker's expectations.

The important thing is to ensure that we are not misleading through visualizations - two-sided line charts and playing with min & max values on vertical axes are two ways I've seen folks mislead...

For each specific decision, you should apply specific tools to represent/visualize the data. It depends on the type of decision. Of course, the audience (decision makers) can be effected bu the type of visualization, though, you need to be very careful in selecting the most appropriate ones. For experts, there is not any difference among the tools, they know how to articulate the data and find the facts. They will require more information or other formats if they need. However, the others may be positively or negatively be affected by the type of visualization or formats.

The visual representation absolutely will have an effect on the way the information is seen and/or understood. I would assume there are either standards or a specific format learned through Stakeholder analysis activities and understanding what and how project information is expected to be both exposed and consumed.

Always know who you are presenting to and if possible how they prefer information to be relayed. No different to knowing about a company before going in for a job interview.

I think most PMs benefit rom applying visualization to the type of data they work with. Like Sante suggested, you have to know your audience and choose the format based on their needs.

All data visualization formats have one thing in common. to attract audience, to ease audience understanding and to make them comfortable while making any decision. Data visualization techniques whether old or new are less meaningful as different organizations addresses this based on what fits their needs.
