In an ideal schedule, is it necessary that, all tasks must be on critical path ?

Activities could be or not could be into the critical path. It depends on some activity attributes. If you have an schedule where all the activities are part of the critical path (I mean, the whole schedule is the critical path) my recommendation is to review it, work on it to change it.

No. The schedule should have all the activities needed to accomplish the project product/service. At the execution stage, the critical path is the longest duration of the needed activities. The activities on the critical path may change because the duration of the activities change, e.g. take less or more time than planned.

If you are using project management software you can have it highlight the critical path. Example, MS Project can show you what it thinks is the critical path.

You still need to use some judgement if you agree with the software, but it brings your attention to areas that are considered a critical path.

In nearly all projects, there will be some tasks not on the critical path, so no it is not necessary. What is necessary is completing the tasks that are on the critical path in order to complete the project.

Critical path is the longest overall duration of project or the longest path of planned activities to logical end points or to the end of the project.I don't know how you define an ideal project but if there are a number of activities which run in parallel and in series too, all can not be on critical path. Yes, if your project only has sequential activities (meaning the next activity can only start after the previous finish and there are no parallel activities with less duration) than you might have all of them on critical path (this is not very common).

In ideal case, less activities on the critical path the better for you to manage the project to completion because you can start and finish all other activities that are not on the critical path (less dependancy and can do them first or in parallel). In reality, most activities delay.

In ideal case, all activities are categorized and scheduled based on a reasonable and true manner and then the critical path comes in. It has nothing to do with the number of tasks on the critical path. You do not have to manipulate the activity or sequencing or ... to reach the minimum or maximum number of activities on critical path. To be successful in most of the cases, you need to consider the practical conditions when scheduling or planning the projects rather than make them mathematically beautiful or ... .

It is not necessary to all tasks to be in the critical path, even you are considering the ideal case. But depending on the project there may be cases where there are several critical paths and all of the tasks are in the critical path. But that means the project is at high risk and you have less control over the project.

It is not necessary that all your activities be on the critical path. I agree with my fellow colleagues.

Clearly it is not necessary

It would be interesting to have the less activities on the critical path, these activities can delay the project.

Have less activities on the critical path, can mean you have fewer activities to have a closer watch.
