Does any of you are handling (or have handled) remote teams?
If so, what communication tools are you using? Are they being effective or you still face misunderstanding or response delays?
In my case we've already used Ryver, Trello, Skype and even Whatsapp, one complementing another.

Thanks,
Suleander

I'd say that depends on where your teams are, I work closely with teams in the US, Latin America, Africa, and Asia
two main drivers 1) very different time zone including different workdays and 2) technology in the country.
For online, I prefer GoToMeeting because it is bandwidth efficient and phone systems when available and cost effective
For offline, the good old email and sms/texts when available
I hope it helps

WhatsApp for fast communication and calls. WebEx/zoom for meetings.
Skype is not one of my favorites, but some people like it a lot..

It is indeed a mix of things.

- With regards to Skype, one of the challenges I've seen is what you are using the Skype client on multiple devices. You will lose messages as they go to another client than the one you are actually active on. Now, with MS Teams, that is no longer a concern, and Teams also brings together a number of other collaboration tools such as file sharing and Wikis.

- It is down to company culture as well. What I would recommend is to keep space for levity in meetings, or a social slot in conference calls, just to talk about other things than just the project. It helps develop relationships. I would also try to encourage the use of video (bandwidth permitting) just to add that face to the name.

- With regards to Whatsapp, I have mixed feelings. We do use it here, but it makes it hard to keep track of information being shared for the project at times. That's where a tool like Teams, fully integrated in the work processes has advantages.

1. Get specific with management regarding acceptable and expected work times for everyone on the team. There should be little excuse for late responses if it has to do project progress and team communication.
2. Set expectations with your team on appropriate communication tactics and timeframes.
3. Identify and utilize the best tool for the job (text and file sharing = slack, video chatting = skype, task management = pm software)
4. Hold the team accountable for involvement. Go slow at first. Slack has public channels where everyone can see if a question is asked to a specific user and they're not responding. Likewise, you can see if that user is online at the moment or not. All users should be during work hours. Place a phone call if you're not getting a slack response and let the team member know a response is awaiting.

I have used Slack very successfully in the past, now I am using Microsoft Teams which looks to be a good competitor to Slack. Face to face is vitally important at a regular cadence. The biggest problem I have ever run into is the "Great Firewall of China" - that is the biggest hindrance to collaboration I have found.
