What is the value of networking without communication?

I am new to this community and surprised about people who "collected" a network of +70.000 people and keep sending network requests without a single word.

I think some people have deluded themselves into believing many connections make them appear to be a skilled PM. It might also be that people are hoping they'll somehow receive benefits just because they're electronically hitched to a stranger with whom they haven't exchanged a single word. I can't fathom in what manner this would occur, and I doubt they can either.

The world is a numbers game and hopefully they are expecting something positive to happen out of the networking.
case in point , just having a profile on LinkedIn gets recruiters from across the Atlantic to contact me with available project management jobs.
I can say I am flattered , but I don't wish to make a drastic sea change and make myself sleepless in Seattle (That's where there is a need for Project Managers in abundance ....)

I will start writing something why I decided to add someone to my network while I am sending a request next time.

I usually add someone who had done a significant thing I noticed in the network, so I am interested to keep in touch with him/her, so I reluctantly click "Connect", and that's how I felt until this post.

There must be a real re-definition needs in networking in this context. This is a good concern raised here.

Agree with Deepesh and Dawson.

Sometime number game also payback to peoples therefore they start believing in quantitative facets only instead of equally focused on qualitative value add. Same happened in communities networks as well.

I guess inculcation of contextual intelligence i.e AI (technology) in project menagement and community network will soon help in eliminating these biases. AI adoption will take a while in PM.

Connecting number of people on this community also improves Influence Score. It may be one of the biggest reason to connect.

"Value" can mean different things to different people. It's the same on LinkedIn; some people have 5000+ connections, while some only add people they have worked/ interacted with. The way I look at it, there's no harm in accepting a request or sending one...

There is a value to making connections. You can search for keywords in your connections profiles. You can also do that without connecting, but the point I'm making is that you are already connected if you reach out to one of your connections that you want to ask a question. They will feel more comfortable because you are already connected.

Number of connections, like Likes, website hits and team velocity are just another vanity metric...

I think it's high time that this platform along with LinkedIn and others introduced a "true" connections metric which assesses how much interaction you've had with a connection within a defined time period.

That would be similar to the difference between Views and Visitors on Wordpress...

Truthfully, I think the connections part of this website is lacking a bit. You need to scroll through your connections page by page. There is no sorting or filtering. I hope that in the future this will improve so that there is more value in it.
Take LinkedIn for example. I have several connections there. I have in the past filtered them by their location or job types so that I could reach out to them with specific questions. When I was last unemployed (several years ago), I reached out to several of my connections looking for opportunities. But it does not need to always be about jobs. I once was having a technical problem and searched through my LinkedIn connections to try to remember who may be able to give me advice. I cannot do this here. On this site I can come to the discussion area and ask questions to everybody. Maybe that is why the networking piece has not matured yet.
However, I will continue to make connections in the hopes that I will find more value at some point in the future.
