Hi Kiron. .. what options did you consider in the space of risk management. ..PMI- RMP? I am quite interested in risk management in the banking sector. What would you suggest ?
I have a PMP certification to my credit too.
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Shalini Prasad
Shalini -

the focus for me remained project management and as I'd witnessed numerous poor implementations of project risk management I decided to specialize in that. In the financial services industry, there are a number of operational risk management learning options but I haven't strayed into those yet.

This isn't going to sound nice, but it is not intended to be mean. This is advice from one professional to another.

You should have looked into career options as part of the decision to pursue your PMP. Otherwise, you risk doing the research only to find out you've spent a lot of time and money on a path you don't want to pursue. There are a few places you should look. It will take a little work.

* Are there options in your company? I've heard it said that executives are never pulled from the pool of project managers. Do you have career aspirations in your company or another company? How did the people in those positions get there?

* What jobs in your job market are looking for the PMP credential? Can you conduct an informational interview (not a job interview) where you talk to people in other companies to find out more about their company and options for PMPs?

* Do you have a local PMI chapter? What jobs do other PMPs in your chapter have? How did they get them?

* Talk to Project Management consultants, conference speakers, and authors. What can they tell you about options outside of your current market?

In my opinion, the focus should not just be about obtaining additional certifications. While they provide a reference when looking for new opportunities inside or outside your current organisation, experience remains critical.

Unfortunately, in my career, I've worked both with terrible project managers holding a PMP, but also with terrific project managers without certification.

As many of the replies indicate, a PMP will provide help when looking for opportunities, but not necessarily within your current role. Do celebrate getting your certification, but put what you have learned to practice. Are there improvements you can make to your day-2-day approach to project management based on what you have learned? After I achieved my PMP, I did take a step back, and look at what I was currently doing and was able to leverage some of the content I had learned preparing for the PMP exam. For other things, experience had already taken me in a reasonable direction (I wouldn't say right, because there can be multiple roads leading to the same destination).

And while a certification is helpful, just to give you an example, I've recently changed jobs, and landed in an organisation where Prince2 and IPMA are the more mainstream certifications. Did my PMP play a role? Maybe as a door opener with HR, but for the rest, it's my experience that did the trick to be hired.
