Yes the downtime is a realistic issues for contractors, moreso in my opinion than the list. If you are out of work 3 months a year total between contracts, your near $100 per hour reduces to $75.

In Canada, we are charging around $135 CAD / Hrs for a Senior PM
Rami -

that sounds high unless we are talking a very specific type of project where domain knowledge is in high demand & low supply. If not, I need to give you a call :-)

Thank you for the response. In my estimation the project manager market rates in Southern California do not support the cost of being independent. This may be true for other areas.
Bill -

In Canada, in may cases it makes sense to be an independent consultant even if you are making the same gross amount as a full time employee as the difference between our personal and small business tax rates is substantial. I don't believe this is the case south of the border.

From my point of view, talking about rates or salaries is not a good idea in this public forum, however, maybe Bill you can create a poll asking the people their rates... from 50-100, from 110-130 whatever...

I worked as a contractor and my salary was from X to X+50 depending on the project needs, duration and skills requested... was it fair or reasonable, for me yes..but maybe for you no...sometimes I decided to reduce my rate to have the opportunity to led projects where I wasn't the expert and challenge myself.

And yes, sometimes the rate pay all the expenses that you listed.

In North America things are too complicated .
Here just negotiate hourly rates and those rates are only for the PM's salary

No annual leave , No sick leave
You have your own private health insurance.
Employer pays for everything if they need you to travel

Plain and simple !

I never worked on contract rates, but I believe hourly rate is in the 60-100 range and salaries around 100-140K.
