Why do projects in general fail?

Yes, I know, there are alot of different reasons why our projects fail but I would argue that the most common reason is that we do the projects too large. A smaller scope and timeline is easier to manage and control than a large. What is the best size of a project? 8-10 resources, 8-10 months? Or would you say that there are other major and common reasons why projects fail?
