Stress is harming your staff’s mental health and your bottom line, rising health costs, combined with increased employee absence impact cost control and workforce productivity.

What tactics are you using to promote healthy living among your team and encourage your team to make better health decisions (Physical & Mental)?

To promote healthy living among employees, some companies are using tactics like financial rewards to encourage their staff to make better health decisions. Already a common practice in the U.S., Canadian companies are increasingly getting on board: 26% of Canadian employers said they plan to offer some type of financial reward in 2012 to individuals who participate in their health management programs—up from just 13% who currently do so. As well, 61% of organizations said they plan to adapt their organizational health strategies over the next two years to include a focus on mental health as well as physical health.

Hi Thi,

This is an excellent cultural practice for physical health and ultimately for mental health. I wish we can do that here as a rituals mandated by the company, even Thai chi would provide stress relieve and flexibility to the body.

Stress can be a killer, so it should be taken seriously. Aside from some of the suggestions here that might be within the control of the PM, the organization should be making sure there are health programs, as this is not the PM's responsibility...unless it is part of the organization's culture,

Yes Sante, absolutely it is beyond the authority of the PM as it involves financial to satisfy the case, but the PM can take initiative steps to communicate about it and get positive results for the team, cause better health management drive better business results.

Stress is needed and you can avoid stress. The point is the level of stress each person can support without impact in their personal life. In the last five years because a hugh transformation I have led inside my actual work place the level of stress into all the variables that could be considered components of stress were high. The only way to deal with that is know people what you have to put in terms of project stakeholder management (is beyond on that but it could considered that). And in my personal case to be honest and talking and action with trust on hand. I made lot of efforts to make involved people work life "as better as possible" including the negotiation of things with the top level management with my focus put on people work life.

Good call out on the dangers of stress.

A few ideas:

1. Walk the talk. If you get stressed or don't work a sustainable pace, team members will mirror your example.

2. Know your team. If you don't know individual team members and what "normal" looks like for them, it's hard to judge when they are overly stressed.

3. "Best way to avoid punch, no be there." Try to avoid putting the team into a stressful situation so it becomes the exception not the rule.

Thank you Kiron, I would also suggest that applying Pomodoro technique would help and secondly create a fun environment, these two can be done at PM level without extra cost just need to balance time management with consideration to critical path.
