I would say it depends! Is this an opportunity that is worth taking the pay cut for? Is the perceived value of this change greater than the pay cut? and is this an ethical move? So many years back I decided to forgo an opportunity that provided me with a 20K more as the value I put on another opportunity in my eyes was much more (though it paid less). The environment, the friendships and potential future opportunities were taken into consideration.

I took a 100K pay cut to work in another country and did projects that I could never have done in my home country. My peers at the time thought I was crazy. As Amany said, there are other values in life aside from the money.

It depends on the opportunity. It is sometimes it is good to take few steps nakc so you gain 10 more in the future. I did take a pay cut to move from one country to another but it paid off on the long term.

I'd take a paycut if the experiance :
- allows me to help and make a difference
- allows me to learn
- is temporary
- is taking me somewhere better in the future
If not I'm not sure it is worth it.

It depends :) Maybe look at it as a percentage instead o a hard number. Can you afford it? Are you taking food away from your family? Can you still pay the mortgage?

I see a theme for moving internationally and receiving a pay cut, but I would not expect to have to take the same remaining, at least from my perspective. I took a pay cut many years ago when I reinvented my career (5 yr. plan), but my life and responsibilities were different then. At this time, I would not do the same, maybe 5%-10%, but then other factors would need to make up for that - healthcare, commute, etc. At my stage, generally, the ladder is one-way.

Now, looking at it differently, I would turn down another opportunity if it did not match my needs even if it came with a significant increase. Again, it all really depends. Questions like this are far from black & white.

I think that in the end it is all a question of what you can learn from the new mandate that you are considering taking on.
I think you should consider your mandates one at a time.
What are the pros and cons to the mandate that you are considering taking?
Are you going to be doing something that you haven't done before?
Is it going to give you an opportunity to work on a specific type of project, etc...
Taking a step back at times is necessary and this might permit you to do so.
I personally would not take a new mandate on the basis of salary alone.

Riyadh -

Been there, done that a couple of times in my career - I never regretted it. With the high tax rate in Canada, that $20-30K is really only $10-15K so trading that off against career progression, working with a better organization, or enjoying a better quality of life is worth it.

I know quite a few folks who have purposely taken a significant salary cut just to reduce their daily commute from a couple of hours down to 15 minutes.

It has to do with the situation. If it provides you with an opportunity which help you advance in your career, you may be interested. Please be advised that project manager can be a person with no authority like a coordinator in an organization and may be a strong person like a CEO. There are lots of factors you need to consider.

Never been in that situation since the beginning of my professional life. But I strongly feel that I will go for it.

For me the important question is what value this transition will bring in my life. Not only will i consider the present but also the future improvements this decision will potentially make
