Communication management is very vital and essential requirement for any project's success. There are various tools and technologies being used to ensure effective communication management in various scale projects. Wherever there are loose hand on communication part, there are likely chances to spend more money/resources even in small projects.

I would like to discuss on global experience where projects are failed or over spent due to poor communication management on various scale projects. Please share your views and experience on the same.

A good PM is a good Communicator, I think communication is one of the most important areas in managing projects. Lack of communication can lead to disaster.

As everyone has mentioned- communication is extremely critical in managing stakeholders and ensuring you have a pulse on the project on an ongoing basis. are you looking for specific case studies?

Hardik -

I took a project over many (many, many!) years ago primarily due to poor communications between the PM and the team. The PM was exceptional at managing senior stakeholder expectations but with the team provided little guidance and expected that the team members had telepathy. Over the course of a few weeks, expectation gaps widened and the PM was facing an open mutiny. When I was dropped in, through a combination of active listening but also over communicating, I was able to regain the trust and credibility of the team.

Certainly, effective communication b/t the team and stakeholders is vital to success. Could you imagine the impact if traffic lights went from green to red?

I like the word" effective" in Andrew's comment above, as communication is generic and might indicate effective or non effective flow of ideas. So let me borrow his word in my comment below.

As it carries rational and or irrational aspect of human factor in projects, effective communication can be a dominant differentiating factor in the success or failure of projects. By communication we can mean oral, written ( written can also take may forms). In fact project managers spend most of their time communicating with all stake holders.in different way, so I think that is the single most important skill that we need to be master of.

Projects involve people of differing functional expertise from intra or inter -organizations who may not have previous shared work experiences and they disband in any time during the project execution. This might create challenges to the project manager which is less likely to happen in permanent organizational set up. So role effective communication is a very vital skill we need to have as project manager.

It's one of the key factors that you need to apply. The method used, how often and when are just some the things to consider. Consider one simple example, you have prepared a great presentation for your project kick-off, but you deliver the presentation with bad communication and presentation skills. No one will be engaged and focused on the project, and the key stakeholders will not feel the "buzz" of the project !!

Because my work life in multiple companies I have participated (including today) into every training/coaching/anything related to communication (between other things) and I have put them in practices. Beyond that I have studied about that including I have wrote an article the PMI has published about the use of Newton´s Laws to understand the interaction of people. Let me say: all you need to know about communication is here: Shannon, C.E. (1948), "A Mathematical Theory of Communication", Bell System Technical Journal, 27, pp. 379–423 & 623–656, July & October, 1948. Forget about any other type of things. Is not trivial. For example, USA NSF Director during Obama goberment lead a group that have detected error correction codes into DNA chain that could impact things related to communication.
