What type of project you are working on? your customer could be your client or your client is a third party developing application to be used by other customers. If you are looking for definition them the PMBOK guide have all definitions. Your sponsor is authorizing the project and financing as same time!

They can be all the same person or entity, and they can be all separate also.

A sponsor is usually an individual or company that provides resources and support, while a customer could be an entity that pay for the product or service and client may be the buyer, purchaser or service requester.
As Sante mentioned it can be all the same person.

Customer is clear, the government
Client to me in this case is the government.
Sponsor in your company is the individual that would help get ressource and support.
On the client side there is a sponsor to the project also, you might not be in contact with the individual.

Be careful that people are not using local knowledge and paradigm when they say "customer". At my job people called any user of our product a "customer" whether it was the government office or the soldier using the gear.
A customer is a person, office, entity that buys something. In this case what you do or make.
