Is this role something distinct from your sponsor as I normally treat my sponsor as a primary champion?

In general, a champion is there to support a PM in overcoming impediments, ensuring that leadership attention & funding remains focused on the project, and helping to get stakeholders aligned towards the project's outcomes.
