How to fight against the insidious culture of “face time,”

Due to expectations that salaried employees should be available 24/7, should devote 60+ hours of face time at the office, and should be in constant touch with a laptop or Mobile phone emails in today’s Managerial profession.

Do you take few extra days onto business trip and combine it with family vacation?
I know it’s more difficult for dual-career families to co-ordinate family time around one person’s travel schedule.

How to balance work-life flexibility & Greedy jobs? is it manager responsibility or the organization need to provide real flexibility and allow people to be in the office only when necessary with growing “culture of connectivity,” saying 16% of the workforce is hyperconnected and that may soon increase to 40%.

In France they have put a legislation to prevent the 24/7 relation of organization with employee. I don't know the full reach of the law, I understand it prevent sending email 24/7 to employee.

Micro management is not a winning approach in relation with employee.

Here we have some organization, that don't have limited/fixed vacation for employee, it wold be too complicated to explain here.

There is other option than presenteeism

@ Vincent, very interesting to know that, it reminds me of the our General manager sending emails on the weekends.
Great response thanks Vincent

I try to avoid this problem in all my engagements. In my projects, I include the communication strategy in the charter and keep an explicit section for expectations during off-work hours.

Example:
- All one-to-one communication is considered to take place in the common overlap between timezones;
- Acknowledgement of any non-direct communication in common overlap hours must happen within 15 minutes of receiving the message;
- Acknowledgement of any non-direct communication outside of common overlap hours must happen within 15 minutes of the start of the next overlap period;

Since the strategy is baked into the charter, hammering it into the project team over and over again during the initial phases helps set the expectation and practice that team members from any team are not constantly available.

(of course, these are for remote engagements. For on-site engagements, it is a challenge especially since certain stakeholders expect project team members to remain on-site for 10-16 hours a day regardless of whether there's work to do or not.)
