Even with the PMI new definition of megaproject.
To me a Megaproject or a Program is something that to be complete need done in it entirety.
I was in what could be consider a megaproject fitting the definition of PMI. In many respect it was manage like 5 major projects, with a last overseeing the group.Could that be consider a program!
I think the distinction if any need to be clarified. Saving Changes...

Megaproject. Not straightforward concept answer after all. It needs to be strengthened.

Hi George
You received a broad range of replies to your discussion. What definition would you propose for incorporation into the next PMBOK update?

Hi Henry,
I would not make the distinction between a project and a megaproject. They are both the same to me; they just differ in size of scope, time, cost, ... constraints, and all other Project Management Concepts.
Even though that's my humble opinion, this is an open discussion in which other people opinions can make you learn of change your perception of something. For now, that's my perception.

For consideration in the next PMBOX edition, here is a definition of a Megaproject:
Megaproject: A popular label assigned by influential persons and news media to construction or system projects, typically infrastructure, with metrics such as: A) Original budget greater than $5B – USD (2018) with a majority requiring government funding. B) Original duration exceeding 7 years and potential to extend to 15 years. C) More than 40 contract packages valued at $100M. D) A project management organization that has more than 5 vertical silos. E) A ratio of more than 10 contracted design and construction professionals to every Owner representative on the management team. F) Restrictive, complex and time consuming policies and procedures. G) Endorsed and monitored by political officials and community advocates. H) All contracting processes require approval by a government oversight board.

Henri - just another project with a different size, that, to be honest, should be broken down in subprojects or to be part of a program or portfolio.

Personally the mega-project definition has changed as my professional experience evolve. For example my first "megaProject" was $100K, I thought that I was the super mega project manager leading a MegaProject....moving forward, $500M, years after $1M...
Then a Mega Project definition not only depends on the organization, cost, budget...also we need to take in mind our experience and feelings in front a Project. Saving Changes...
