Hi everyone... I feel there is still lack of awareness on importance of PMP certified project managers in NON-IT and especially in construction industry. and even MNC companies in this industry were not feel it is mandatory or important..

If you have any opinions on the same. please let me know.

Thanks

I would like to add to the reasoning presented already the fact that politics get involved. In engineering the professional license is like a "club"; therefore too often an engineering license is required or preferred for a project manager's job, not realizing the knowledge/experience of a certified project manager may be more convenient to get the project done.

Well Prince 2 is a frame work like so many other I think the base should be to get PMP and as many others mentioned here it should be like red seal ticket for electrician to be able to do electric work. so it would be treated as license not certification as Sergio mentioned that like DR. ,advocates, or professional engineer to stamp a drawings but in reality it is more powerful than P.ENG because as Project Manager you can have many engineers working under you and for you.
It is also true that so many people are successful PM without it and some carry the designation but no experience or no leadership / management skills

Let's hope that industries are getting rapid changes and they realize the importance of more credentials and experience, it is always to work on own skills development and have activities to coop with evolving knowledge in the field.
I started to see on few advertisement that it says PMP is preferable.
That's encouraging Riyadh.

@Sante, Thanks a lot and I believe few parts fall on us as well to keep educating the employers and the media about the importance of been certified project manager just like the certified Quality manager or Quality Engineer.

Is there an industry where it is mandatory?

Some industry recognized the value, but don’t make it mandatory.

It depends upon the local governing bodies to make it mandatory for developers to have certified PMs, however having a certified PMP only gives an extra edge, in reality hiring managers or projects developers really care about deliverables(result oriented ) and not Certifications earned by Manager

PMP credential can not mandory because is certification from a STANDARD not a REGULATION, A standard is not enforceable.

I think Country must adhere and suggest the use of the best practices provided in Standards, tailored to the need of the country in order to achieve almost always success in everty project.

And approach need some politics activities.

Why it could be mandatory? Will it could be something related to PMI mandatory? Project management does not end into PMI. For example, in Europe, PRINCE2 is number one way to perform project management. Take into account the PMI“s certification credentials are not professional credentials in the real sense of professional definition. As medical doctor or lawyer you can not perform the profession without a credential because in case of bad practice people can act legally against you. So, they can not be mandatory. On the other side, to be or not to be accepted in some domains is a matter of value perception and value most of the times are related to needs. I worked as project manager in construction projects and what I see people on that domain do not perceived value on that certifications. But is my personal experience only. If you can see the PMI tried to promote the project manager use in that domain because you can see lot of articles each month in related publications. In my personal opinion that is not enough.
May be in order to avoid Monopolization I think a Global recognized certification should be a good stand in construction industry such PRINCE2 or PMP I don't know the content in PRINCE2 certification but We (PMP) we need just to be prepared with our negotiation Skill.

One had to understand that after 5 -6 years of experience any working person is doing more of managerial job as compared to his core field which may be engineering, sales, marketing or even design and development, basically at this stage he is doing the organizing work, getting the work done from his subordinates , guiding them training them and preparing then
for next stage.even though he is PMP or not will not much of difference until the system is performing. this is the mind set of every company, organisation, govt or country. importance is to get the things done , the system should run irrespective of who is running the system.
