I am a PMP certified IT professional, can someone please suggest how I can make a career shift from IT to Education Sector. Apart from conducting PMP training programs what other opportunities are available in Education Sector? Currently I am based in India.

Hi Mohammed, it really depends on your skillset and interest areas. Before I began my corporate career I taught programming languages to under graduate students. If you want to be a corporate trainer then having proficiency in one or two areas other than PMP would be beneficial. You can look for related certifications like Agile or PgMP etc. You may even find some freelancing opportunities as well.

If you are planning to shift into Educational institutes as teaching faculty, that would be different story altogether.

Mohammed -

You may want to take a basic course in adult education to get the buzzwords and common processes/models.

I'd also look at more opportunities to deliver PM training within your own company, your PMI chapter or at conferences to build your portfolio.

Look for folks that have done the same and ask advice.

I am in a similar boat - I want to dip my toes into training for PMP. This is because I do have a flair for engaging participants in such workshops, it falls squarely in my interest area, and it becomes a back-up career in case things go south at my job.

One of my mentors has recommended an approach path which includes the following steps:
1. Conduct upto 3 training sessions within the organisation - get feedback and refine my technique.
2. Conduct upto 2 free-of-cost training sessions with an REP; build a network and gain further experience.
3. Tap this network and start training professionally.

I am still stuck in step 1. None of the interested folks I know can get enough time off for a sustained training on project management methodologies.

Would love to hear responses from other folks on this thread.

The Education sector is all about tertiary degrees. While you add to your certification list like the PMP, consider a degree or post-graduate diploma in Education. You can do these online while you work.
