I am looking for examples of Goals with Measures you have put in place for your PMs to measure performance each year. I want to balance areas they have a majority of control, as well as not create a huge amount of detail in finding out the measures themselves. Areas I am interested in are Productivity, Quality, Service, Skill/Knowledge development. Thanks in advance for your ideas and recommendations.

Francis -

The three areas I focused on with my PMs were:

1. Project performance metrics - e.g. EVM, on time/on budget

2. Sponsor/Customer/team/stakeholder satisfaction

3. Definition & achievement of personal development objectives

In addition to Kiron's comments, mapping business value to project outcomes is sometimes an area often overlooked.

Excellent advice already from Kiron and Sante.

I would just like to add a crystallisation on the personal development objectives - to verify if they meet the required skills of the organisation.

Which means there needs to be an organisation-level (or project-level) objective to have x% of the workforce at an Advanced level of a certain skill (and so on).

Coming form the engineering and construction environment, where our projects are based on contracts. we always have a metrics on profits, change control (the timely processing of changes), health & safety and ISO9000 quality conformance / audits.
