Don't take on too much. Focus on learning from mentors, other PM's, lessons learned and communities such as this one.

Really important to find your footing and get comfortable in a new setting or role. This takes time and is a completely normal process. As time progresses, build confidence and influence within the team and organization. As my wife says, you have to swim through the mud to get to the clearer waters.

Be aware you enter a people business, not a technical realm. Look for good mentors, learn about yourself and how to influence others. Be passionate and patient, or in other words, develop a feeling for balance.

I think the best lessons always come from our own mistakes. But they’re only valuable lessons if we apply the learnings in a meaningful way. Also, try to understand your customer’s goals, and identify what they care about and how they like to communicate.

Aside from starting off by shadowing an experienced PM to learn the job on the field, the novel PM needs to be told not to be afraid of making mistakes.

I agree with Kiron's and Eduard's comments. Finding a seasoned PM and not being afraid of making a mistake are two great ideas to build off of.
I would also add never be afraid to ask for help if you encounter a situation that you are not experienced In.

It is very beneficial to learn how to be resourceful in ambiguous or difficult situations. Besides knowing who you can refer to in your organization for clarity, there's a lot of useful information on the web you can access for free! You just have to get your hands dirty and dive in!
