I beleive Business Development is one of the important roles of PM .. Should we add it as 11th knowledge area or it can be added to stakeholders knowledge area as a start.

It might fall more into the Sales domain than project management. Certainly they can be across it because stakeholders are across it, but once you cross project management with sales (which Business Development effectively is), then there can be a conflict of interest.

How many times we increased the scope of work to make more money for our employer, or for ourselves and how many times we generated new projects. Personally, I try always to manage stakeholder in a business development and account management approach.

A Project Manager’s role is to be the company Advocate, while The Account Manager’s role is to be the Client Advocate. They are flip sides of the same coin, approaching situations from opposite perspectives – each of which has tremendous value to keeping the company healthy and profitable. However, having the two hats will be remarkable add up for both of the company and the client.

Is not a project manager duty. Is a business analyst duty. You will find it inside the business analysis literature or guides just in case of the PMI.

Thanks, but how about adding it to PMBOK, because I think PM is promoting his company and making the sale by adding a scope or making the sale of a new project.

Here my personal opinion: While I understand your point due to I worked a lot on consulting firms I firmly believe that PM must perform as project management, not performing as a seller. The worst case is when PMs tried to perform as sellers. Just in case somebody needs something related to that my recommendation is going to well established methods like "Solution Selling", LAMP or "Power Base Selling".

I agree with Kevin in that although not an ideal scenario in the least, as a consultant, it happens where there is 'expectation' to try to make suggestions for additional services that may help a specific scenario if such a scenario arises. But as we all seem to agree on, it is not a project manager's place. The information should be shared with the account manager to take any action.
