I beleive Business Development is one of the important roles of PM .. Should we add it as 11th knowledge area or it can be added to stakeholders knowledge area as a start.

Kevin -

Business development falls under general management knowledge and may not be applicable to many projects. For example, if I am upgrading an internal application (back office) or am renovating an existing building, I'm not sure there's much relevance to business development.

It would seem to be a better fit for Product Management than Project Management...

Absolutely. Great overview. Often a program/project manager is in a great position to identify potential business benefits as he or she often interfaces with all business teams across the organizational hierarchy. Staying abreast of or even defining organizational strategic plans while watching competitors, partners, and listening to the voice of the customers the project managers can identify opportunities and threats simply by asking dialogue opening questions.

Can increase our value significantly and grow into an organizational leader within the C-Suite.

In some respects, business development function from a project perceptive may fall loosely into the stakeholder knowledge area, which includes proposing, documenting and implementing changes in a project. If business development by consultant project professionals crosses the threshold for adding scope and business to consultant service contract it may be considered counter to the objectives of project management.

It may be more appropriate to address business development by proposing PMI create a Practice Standard for Consulting on Project.

It is a sensitive subject and it is hard to agree on, but it is very useful argument and thoughts.
Project managers would like to focus on delivery, however, our employer (Private sector) would like to see the business development aspect.
I started in Business Development and then crossed to Project Management and this is where I came from.
