At some point, the cultural differences will become evident. Try to get an inter cultural expert to give you a heads up. The Indian companies are strong on internal processes but work culture can be quite different.

there are different factors to consider: are you going to work with a vendor or set up your own division there? You can do joint venture also. There is another dimension about resource market and legal procedures and IP protection.

I agree with the cultural issue, especially how you divide responsibilities in a creative process, i.e. if you want them to feel comfortable taking the responsibility of design you might have to be very clear on that.

Of course they're great engineers, but from my experience they are more rigid on those internal processes, and can be felt as taking less initiative, at least until you get over the hurdle of handing over design responsibility.

This all said with half a year experience of doing building design with an Indian company.

Our experience outsourcing to India was a total disaster. We decided to do the work in-house and accomplished more with four people in 5 month then they did with 25+ people in two years.

Well there are some reasons why outsourcing in India is good. As we all know Indian outsourcing firms has talented and experienced people, they are specialists that are highly trained when it comes to their specialisations. Outsourcing can help you focus more on your business core and strategies in order to attain more success. Indian outsourcing firms can offer cheaper labour costs and pricing. The slight downside here is their language barrier. Yazmin Barajas, Outsourcing Marketing
