Being new to the Project Management field I've noticed there are several certifications available. My question, is it worth focusing on obtaining a CAPM since most employers seem to look for PMP?

Whenever you pursue a credential, you need to rationalize the costs (time & money) incurred. While the CAPM is not referenced frequently in job postings as compared with the PMP, if you are many years from gaining the necessary experience prerequisites for the PMP, having the CAPM is better than having no credential, but you alone can judge based on your local job market whether it is worth it or not.

I agree with having at least some formal certification showing knowledge as it could not hurt. Thanks for you input.

Like Kiron suggested, If you are considering applying for CAPM certification, you may also have to think about whether it's worth the time, cost, and effort to do so. However, from the recruiters point of view it does show that you have at least some dedication to a career in project management.

Getting a CAPM might help you land a Jr. PM role, which can lead to a PM role before you actually earn your PMP.

Definitely valid points to consider.

CAPM is a good start David because theoretically, you can't go for the PMP without working experience. I think it is a great start and will put you on the right track. This is my personal opinion.

I completely agree with you Rami. CAPM certification, worst case, shows employers dedication and willing to gain knowledge, which is always a good thing to have.
