In my experience, you need to define the key process areas for your company aligned with the CMMi guidelines and start off with a pilot project. Based on the sucess, you can institutionalize it across the company. You can definitely hire planning and implememntation consultants to assist you.

There is an interesting article written "from the trenches" on this topic: Process Improvement – Is it a Lottery?

This article provides an overview of the approach utilized to implement process improvement across its global organization without losing focus of its business drivers. It provides a practical overview of how over a four year period an organization moved from CMM® Level 1 to Level 3 and is currently transitioning to CMMI® Level 4. It will provide a candid insight including lessons learned and approaches adopted to achieve success. It will also provide examples of significant and measurable business benefits that can be accrued from adopting a documented and repeatable process improvement framework.

"from the trenches" was an excellent case study.

Interesting Article indeed. Perhaps they over complicated the effort but not as badly as most Six Sigma efforts do. What caught my attention is the need to adpapt the PI MODEL to Operational Realities... implies a disconnect to me out of the gate.

Yes, it had a different take on the subject. I would agree with the author of the article as it has transpired and the overall CMMi implementation program has succeeded in that organization.- going with "it is what it is" philosophy!

Hi, you have not mentioned what level you are targeting. anyways , one of the biggest area where you should focus on is measurement. The metrics should be well defined and strategically alingned to the organisational goals. Pain area is to to get the projects collect and report the data and correctb data :-) ! Another basic hurle is implementation of any process and institutionalising the same . For CMMi , you should have the majority of the projects comply to the processes and show evidence.
Hi,

How is CMMI levels implemented in various divisions of the company.? What should be the starting point and approach?

I suggest you start by focusing first on the issues your current development practices are creating. Next identify the changes that you need to make in order to resolve those issues. Some might be CMMI related others may not.

The goal should be to develop and support applications that align with the needs of the business in a way that is predictable, reliable, cost effective and so on.

There are plenty of HOW TO books on implementing CMMI on amazon.

Just remember, CMMI is a framework not a silver bullet. The real solution is in achieving an effective way to identify needs, specify those needs, improve business applications to meet those needs and to support changing needs into the future.
