When preparing an estimate/proposal what is the structure to organise work and material estimate? Do you use a custom, in house method or a structure such as Masterformat or Uniformat ?

What is done in your region? in your organisation?
is it require by the client organisation?

Gentlemen-
I produced all the estimates for my own GC firm. I took the latest masterformat or uniformat headings and placed them on an excel sheet to allow me to punch in quantities and prices that would extend using formulas to create total prices.
For structural items I took off every part based upon the structural schedules.
I would pull the quantities from plans manually, but lately my Cost Engineers inform me they like some of the ON-Screen programs they are using on the autocad plans.

I still group our total estimates or Vendor Prices based upon division, using Excel.

From the trenches!

Rami,

Agree a Project Management Consultant should not be doing the estimate.
I never said that Vincent. On the contrary, we as PM Consultants do all the estimates.

Rami,

Sorry I didn’t understand correctly.

I have often seen consultants make a first estimate, then validate with trade, make adjustment before communicating with clients. Would that resemble your experience?

We usually use MasterFormat CSI codes, whether 16 divisions version or 48 divisions.
