Why are you pursuing or have pursued CAPM certification?

Just curious about those who have pursued and are currently pursuing CAPM, what has motivated you to do so?

For me, as assistant to the Portfolio Manager in my company, I have no project experience. While the role is highly administrative, it requires extensive communication with stakeholders of various projects but not at the project level. It's pre-project and high-level, involving decision gate approvals for presenting the business case etc. I also track project progress at milestone level for all capital projects, using a combination of MS Project and excel for portfolio reporting.

I used to feel a bit lost in the world of PM terminology and processes. Taking a course in CAPM has bridged the gap for me specific to those tasks. Yes, I could have done a more basic course of study but decided to pursue the challenge of this certification. However, CAPM has also allowed me the opportunity to be more involved in project related activities. It's the recognition that CAPM gives...the recognition that you want to be involved, and gratefully, my portfolio manager allows me the opportunities including additional training.

I am so glad that I have studied it and just exam to do. Please let me hear your story? Why have you pursued or are pursuing CAPM certification?

I encourage all my undergraduate students of Project Management to pursue CAPM as a formalising of their study. Once they finish the unit in Uni, they are technically ready straight away for CAPM. The unit is based on PMI-PmBOK

Actually, I've been looking to further studies in PM after I'm finished with CAPM. Any advice?

Hi Kevin, this is one of the reasons why I went for the CAPM. Aside from not having enough hours to take the PMP, I was already using the PMBOK a lot for my MSPM and thought to myself "why not just take the CAPM since I am so familiar with the PMBOK?". I am glad I did!

CAPM is your first step into project management knowledge for people without experience in this domain. It is a good start step. I did not have to do so and did the PMP directly.

CAPM is a good all-rounder and entry level certification.

Yes I agree with what have been said above, I wasn't considering for it as it does not give big jump on the resume but it is good for starter people who doesn't have many hours on projects so it is like you are putting on leg ahead and you need PMP to put the second leg, I have done something similar in the past (PMQ) but it didn't fly in N.America. but good luck for whoever planning to do it.

Rami,

CAPM is a first step in PMI certification world - no PM Knowledge :)

People can get PM knowledge from any PM resource -

True, yet, the CAPM provides you with wealth of knowledge so it is one resource to do so :-)

From "any" PM resource or from a knowledgeable PM?

If the later, how this PM got this knowledge?

Repeat the cycle until the "egg and chicken" dilemma arises.

Hi Lavaughn,

I am about to finish my MSPM in 2 months. Although most people think that getting a MBA + PMP is more practical, I think it was a no-brainer for me because I only needed to take 5 additional classes (vs. 13 classes) to complete the MSPM degree due to some transferrable credits from other programs. Perhaps you can look into MSPM programs too.
