Hi All! I hope all of you are in good health. I needed to ask that what could be the best way to implement P.M tools and methodologies in academia industry where research is more prior than the administration and when the old processes to be followed are already defined but majorly lack efficiency.
Can P.M be implemented in Administration department as well? Saving Changes...
Hi Saad, Mostly they use agile which can fit better for the academic industry and it is trendy by the way nowadays.

I was wondering within the university, agile would be more beneficial for IT departments rather than administrative departments?
As with any implementation of PM standards & supporting tools, you need to start by understanding where you currently are and what objectives you are trying to address.
Assuming a low level of organizational PM maturity and no standards, you'd want to start simple with very basic PM training for all roles involved in supporting or delivering projects.
Then, introduce a few (under a dozen) new practices supported by simple templates. Make sure you get some basic definitions in place regarding what is and isn't a project.
Inspect and adapt those practices based on stakeholder feedback.
And then take it from there...

I think as per your advise it would be better for me to segregate projects and non-projects and implement very basic templates at first. Can any P.M methodologies and templates be applied to the stuff which is only already defined processes to accomplish a certain frequently repeated task, but its not a project.

Saad- Two basic things to keep in mind are that:
1) Make sure that both the departments - Research and Administration are using the same templates and tools (Either Non-Agile or Agile). It just helps in managing the cross functional teams better. This is not a rule though. When organisation gets matured, you need not follow this protocol.
2) Do not overburden with processes, tools, templates. Because when the team is new or there are lack of efficiency or there is a need for faster time to market, processes should not affect the efficiency.One should start slow and gradually improve the process. Otherwise it might fail.

As per your advice i have proposed most basic PM templates to the Competent Authority, in order to get them implemented in various departments.
Following my ambition to bring forward efficient P.M procedures in academic community, alongside struggle to achieve the target of creating mega industry-University liaison, so that our students could get benefit from it.
I have come to the tentative conclusion that implementation of PRINCE2 tools and framework in majority departments of my Academic organization is feasible(as per my understanding). As working of my organization is relevant to Controlled Project Environment.

For existing operational processes, the focus should be on process effectiveness & efficiency. Ensuring there are proper process controls in place, good training and well documented procedures will all help. While some PM knowledge areas such as quality management will come into play, for these, you'd be better off drawing from lean six sigma or other process excellence frameworks.
