What is a Project Champion?

Is this concept defined in any of the PMI standards?

George -

There is a fantastic article by Pinto, J.K. and Slevin, D.P. that appeared in the Project Management Journal in 1989 that talks about the project champion. If you are a PMI member, you can read the article here: https://www.pmi.org/learning/library/proje...n-success-2135.

Thanks,

It's not referenced in the Lexicon or the PMBOK Guide, but in general, I've seen it used interchangeably with the Sponsor but also with any key stakeholders who are expected to champion the rationale behind and the scope of the changes although the term "Change Champion" is more commonly used for those.

I did not see a reference to this in PMBOK but I know this exists in many companies as part of their reward system but each company defines it differently. It could mean a champion from safety point of view for construction projects for example.

Ezara, Good Reference.

I don't remember it coming up in the PMBOK Guide either, but I did find a reference to it in a PRINCE2 blog: https://www.prince2.com/blog/10-project-sponsor-duties/

It's in the context of a highly engaged sponsor, so a Project Champion is presumably any influential stakeholder who goes above and beyond to help the project.

Ideally, your sponsor should be your project champion. I can't say it always works out this way.

The article gives a great overview of what a project champion is. I found the article to be quite interesting and have added it to my PM toolkit as it will be useful on at least one of my upcoming projects. Empowering one's team never hurts!

A project champion is normally the project sponsor in my experience - as a term it better.decribes the role. The role still needs to be defined and the champion needs to understand the responsibilities of the role.

Interesting comments, I would understand champion someone totally different that a sponsor (which at some point could be the same person but not by definition)

While I can envision situations where the project sponsor is not formally labeled as project champion, I would question why the person was the sponsor if the person did not have a vested interest in the success of the project. Of course, this ignores the reality that some projects are allowed to continue long after they should be cancelled. It's hard to be a champion for something that you know is failing but have to continue.
