Hello everyone, I have a question to suggest: assuming you have the prerequisites to register for the PMP exam and get approval on your application, how long does it take in your opinion to prepare for certification?

My local PMI chapter offered a 12-week prep course that met once a week. I also studied for 2-3 hours each night during the 12 weeks. I sat for my PMP exam three weeks before graduating with my MPM degree.

Everyone is different though. Only you can determine what is best for you as far as studying and feeling ready to sit for the exam.

I highly suggest a study group. I earned my PMP with the help of the WiPM group many years ago! (they no longer exist, unfortunately since PMI decided a "women's" group was redundant - Big mistake IMHO)
The study group provided camaraderie, shared tools/tests and some healthy competition. I doubt I could have done it without them. It helped me tremendously. We all worked and conferenced once per week going through each of the knowledge areas. It took about 6 months overall. I'm a terrible test-taker, but I passed easily because of this inspiring group. Good luck to you!

I saw people invest as low as 80 hours and pass and many having more that 300 hours. The average from my classes is 160-240 hours.
Depending on your capacity per week, it might well take 20+ weeks duration.

It took me 2 1/2 months and about 5-8 hours a week. I read some books (Rita's of course) and did a lot of web test practice time (PMTraining.com). I think it depends on your experience level and ability to retain the PMBOK information.

Nicole,

Nice question, are we all alike?

Time to study/prepare is different for all. Some of the reasons connect to experience. I have teach prep class and individual come from different backgrounds. Some individual have experience in one knowledge area, they likely need more study.

each case is different

To be on the safe side making a score of over 80% consistently in prep exam is a minimum, with the real exam stress you'll do less.

Thanks all for your answers.
I would have liked to get a realistic measurement based on the experience of many (not only mine that was about 200 hours) but I realized that each path is actually different.
As a very rough estimate I could say that it takes about four months, but it is only a general indication.
