Does anyone know if a MS project plan can update a master or separate, unique project plan automatically without using project server? Thanks!

If you have a master schedule which has a bunch of inserted linked schedules then I believe when a child schedule gets updated and you next open the master it will reflect the changes.

That's the extent of native automation but I am sure more is feasible through Visual Basic or other development...

As long as the projects are linked, peer or children plans are automatically updated. Refreshing the master plan would be required, though (I do this by closing and opening it).

Of course, as with all automation, sometimes this creates more problems than solutions - especially in scenarios with unfixed dates, changing efforts, changing durations, and project reporting. Wherever possible, as a result, I try to cram everything into one mpp file.
