Hello,

I'm new to the world of Project Management. I've been studying about it since October 2017 and I'm in preparation stages to take the CAPM Exam.

Currently I work as a Team Coordinator/Office Administrator, but I would like to start seeking opportunities to get PM experience.

What would be your advice for someone in my shoes? Where do I start? Are there specific entry level positions that would be a benefit?

Thanks!

Hi Ralph, it sounds like you are already on a great path to project management success. Many start with a CAPM certification and a role in projects similar to a coordinator or office administrator, as long as it is within a project or assisting projects. As time goes by, you will be asked to join other projects and climb up the ladder in terms of roles and responsibilities.

Ralph -

If there aren't opportunities for you to gain experience in the profession in your current company (either as a junior PM or a project coordinator to a senior PM), I'd suggest joining the PMI Chicagoland chapter and apply for some volunteer opportunities as those will give you a good chance to practice what you are learning through your CAPM studies while dealing with many of the challenges faced my PMs.

Good luck!

You can find many in-person and virtual Project Manager volunteer opportunities on Volunteermatch.org. Volunteering is a great way to get experience you can add to your resume.

Ralph,

Like Eric suggested outside your working context volunteer activities can be a great place to look.

I would also suggest looking at process/procedural efficiencies or gaps within your current position, it would be the most relevant as you likely see the daily risks and issues that arise from current problems. You could explore a current issue for example document retrieval and suggest looking for solutions by conducting an internal survey. Another suggestion might be consider customer satisfaction related projects. Good luck!

I think you are on the right track. Starting as a Project Coordinator and working on your CAPM is a good patj so seems you are starting off the right foot. Good Luck.

Some great responses, already.

You could also volunteer within your organisation for internal assignments. These could involve setting in place a structure or a process (for even simple things) for your immediate team or department.

Not only will this be valuable (and displayable) experience, but your effort to take initiative will be deeply appreciated.
