Shu-Ha-Ri is basically about different stages of skill mastery. What stage are you on your project management learning path?
Shu - obey all the rules without diverging
Ha - break away from the rules while still respecting them
Ri - transcend the rules and innovate/create your own way Saving Changes...
Alistair Cockburn, and many others have written about the use and application of Shu Ha Ri (from the Japanese Noh theatre) in agile environments and it applies perfectly to any learning process.
I am mostly in "Ha" stage with occasional "Ri".
Thanks Najam, yes it seems to fit perfectly in project environments in areas such as team development, especially Agile. Saving Changes...
As Sergio says, it has its origins in martial arts and is relevant to the maturation of a team from Follow the rule to Break the rule to Be the rule...
Like other maturity approaches, the expectation is that you might be at Shu for one set of practices or capabilities while at Ha for others...

Agreed Kiron, there's overlapping stages for each individual and team. Saving Changes...

Thanks, Sante for sharing this. Never heard about this. I guess, I'm in between Shu and Ha, but mostly in the Shu range.

Thanks Anish, actually if you look at your project experience over the years, you may be surprised that you are most likely in the Ha range. When we challenge stakeholder assumptions, identify and plan responses to risk, create ways to resolve conflict, brainstorm cause and effect issues, identify risk opportunities and the list goes on, we are in many ways practicing "Ha" and sometimes "Ri".
