Long emails are easy to make, a short email takes n times more to do...

Short emails takes longer, so most PMs go for the shorter and less time consuming long email. Annoying?

Long emails tend to make people tune out the message being conveyed. I prefer taking the extra time to compose short, clear and direct emails - they prevent confusion (which can take considerable time to clarify), and people are much more likely to respond when they see I don't waste their time with long, rambling emails.

I try to keep my emails short and use bullet points. It helps direct the eye of the reader better. I also use bold and underline to give focus.

I had one manager that notoriously never read through emails I sent him, even if they were only 2 lines. For him, I used color.

When writing an email it is important to know who your reader is and how to entice them to absorb the information you are sending. You need to encode your messages in a way that makes it easy for them to decode.

Know your audience, short, concise and too the point. If more details are needed then it may warrant an actual discussion.

Janice - you're right! This reply is even better.

As you mention, why not setting up to having a meeting and forget about the long threads.

Some even suggests to ditch email communication... I wouldn't go that far, but it is an interesting article.

Depends on the Audience. When you are trying to brief your strategy to your team, to keep them in sync with your thoughts, I would prefer longer emails with nuances in such scenarios.

Whereas when it comes to Sr.Management status update communication, short crisp emails, to the point would be of help, hence I go by that.

Good comments above. George, when I read the topic, it made me smile, b/c you are right. It can certainly be a process to best craft an email. There's a combination of factors, such as content and audience.

I always consider BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front), following up with clear and concise supporting information
