I need to get an estimate for a contract position in the NY metro area for a full-time IT project management contractor. Does anyone have a feel for a hourly pay range for this type of position for this area? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Adam - it's been a couple of years since I had PM consultants in NYC - but at that time we were paying $64/hr or about $125k/year. That number would be for top shelf talent.

Thanks Donald. That seems low to me. I am located just outside of Philly now and I have some consultants in the same role that are $65-$90. Hmm....

Are you hiring from a staffing firm or consulting firm? There is a huge difference. When I worked in consulting, as a PM, my bill rate was $250/hr plus expenses.

For someone coming from a staffing firm, I would expect a bill rate of about $100-125 or so.

Now, that is bill rate - what the consultant\contractor actually receives might be significantly lower but I think what you were asking was bill rate as in, you are looking for someone to fill a position, not what you could expect to receive. Correct?

Yes that is correct Bethany. I was looking for the bill rate not necessarily what the consultant would be receiving. The $100-150 range is what I had in mind, so I was looking for some validation. Thanks for the info.

I've worked as an independent consultant in NYC for the past 10 years. Rates are dependent on the skillset required, the number of years of experience, and the subject matter expertise. A PMP certified PM with 8 years of full lifecyle experience managing large scale projects in the financial services sector will command a lot more than a less senor PM with experience in a different industry. Recruiting firms markup hourly salaries 15 - 30%. You should execute a quick search on dice.com to see how much your PM will cost. The total rate per hour will vary from $70-$120 per hour (including markup).
