Whenever it is needed. At building the team stage, in the beginning, it is essential however later on I use it as a treat, award or milestone achievement, and sometimes to break ice whenever conflicts start to go out of control.

When working with project teams, it is important to get them together socially regularly - maybe once a week or every other week. I have found this reduces conflicts and increases collaboration. I have done this through taking a group out to lunch, getting together for dinner or meeting after work to have a drink. Additionally, incorporating some "social time" into weekly team meetings is also valuable.

Taking time to lunch with project team, in the lunch room is one approach I like. A great context to exchange in a less formal way, nice information come out of that. Give chance to every one to know a bit more on other project team members.

Getting out for get together in 5@7 is more efficient in my opinion. Lunch/diner in a group is longer and you can talk with just a few people.
