The requirement to ensure alignment between projects and strategy has become almost a prerequisite for long-term success. Sometimes projects are proposed that do not align with the company’s goals but because someone has a personal interest or is in the interest of a key stakeholder's or sponsors department. In that case, a PM should atleast raise the question of how the project fits in with the company’s strategic goals but I would say before you raise the question, you should have a thorough knowledge of company short- and long-term objectives.

Totally agree that the question should be asked. However, should the Sponsor provide the Project Goals that they expect the project and you as an external PM to deliver; along with stating that the project goals are indeed aligned to the Strategic Goals, however they are unable to detail the Company's Strategic Goals with an external contractor, should one not take the assignment?

Undoubtedly. Especially from the perspective of Organizational Project Management. If the project has been taken on for the purpose of delivering on objectives that are internal to the organization, then the PM inevitably becomes the highly visible and implicitly responsible individual for delivering on the strategic objectives required therein.
