So, not sure how many of you have seen that PMI now has a Program Management Certification but I'm curious as to what others think about this new certification. I haven't seen many job descriptions on the job boards that have this as a requirements. What do y'all think?

So what do y'all see as the next steps? Go directly to ASAPM? Should a proposal be drawn up?

I think we should draw up something more tangible before we approach anyone formally, although I would like to see more people get involved. We should then treat this like a project - develop a charter, plan out the deliverables, assign work packages, etc. The web host I use for my company has a forum capability and I am happy to set that up on my site and offer it as a central forum for tracking / managing / communicating on this; or we can continue to use Gantthead as a communications hub. I guess I see us developing some kind of proposed scorecard, a value proposition, some kind of roadmap for getting it out there, etc. Does that make sense to everyone?

Hi Andy,

I agree. Given that this topic is sensitive, controversial, a benefit to some, a threat to others, it might be a good idea to approach this as an "exploratory commission". At a very high level, perhaps the following "Phase 0" can get things started:

  1. Initial idea exchange with a small group, perhaps those on this post and a few others.

    • Draft a high level view of business need, goals, beneficiaries, etc.

    • Arrive at a consensus view on alternatives for "PM FICO Score"

    • Vet out issues and expected objections

  2. Review with and seek support, feedback, and participation from parties inclined to be supportive

    • Practitioners

      • PMs, PMO Managers, etc.

    • Organizational and standards bodies

      • PMI, ASAPM, SEI, etc.

    • Vendors

      • PPM Vendors (PPM Magic Quadrant Players)

    • Thought leaders
      and PM communities

      • Gardner Group

      • Consultants and SMEs

      • PM training firms

  3. Phase 0 Review

    • Review of findings

    • Assessment of alternatives

    • Roles and responsibilities
      considerations

      • Core team

      • Extended team

      • Role of support organizations (PMI, ASAPM, etc.)

    • Organizational and technical support considerations

Perhaps, we start with those of us on this post and we each identify one or two other participants in a cross section of areas to add both balance and depth. Then we could convene a conference call and beginning to this. Just one idea - I am open to anything. Count me in..! :)

Mark, that looks good to me. I would probably add success criteria to point 1 - you probably envisaged that as part of the etc, but don't want to assume. We should also discuss timelines given that this is something that we are going to have to do in our 'spare' time. I'm definitely willing to get involved, and as mentioned am happy to host some kind of portal / forum if it will help. One thing you have to promise though Mark - at some point in this process you have to show me how to format Gantthead posts to be something other than a single paragraph :-) Andy Jordan, President, Roffensian Consulting Inc., www.roffensian.com

I'll volunteer to develop the rough draft of the scope document - I could provide for your review by end of next week if that works?

And I second Andy's post - would love to know how you get more than one huge paragraph.... ;)

Hi Bethany,

Can you join Andy and me on a conference call next Wednesday, June 27th, at 12 noon (EST)..?

We are scheduling a conference call to make each other’s acquaintance and to move things along as we have probably exhausted the use of this Gantthead discussion forum. By the way, that was a great post of yours..!

Also, as a first step, or pre-step, it would be great to share perspectives and ideas a little bit further. For example, the Fair Isaac folks that do the FICO score credit ratings have a site called myFICO and on the home page of this site when you click on the About FICO Scores tab you see a really neat summary and graphical depiction of the five general categories that make up the FICO score.

  • Payment History - 35%

  • Amounts Owed - 30%

  • Length of Credit History - 15%

  • New Credit - 10%

  • Types of Credit Used - 10%

Also, when you click on the myFICO is the industry's most trusted source tab you see some nice stats and testimonials for the use and importance of the FICO score.

  • 90% of the largest US banks use FICO scores

  • Over 12,000,000 FICO scores delivered to date

  • More than 60% of myFICO consumers check their scores at least once a year

  • Quotes

    • "The FICO score has become the single most important indicator used by lenders to predict whether you will repay [a loan.]”

      • New York Times

    • "Learn the score. If you’re in the market for a mortgage, get your FICO credit score at myfico.com.”

      • Newsweek

    • "Stop guessing about your credit score. Find out. Go to www.myfico.com.”

      • Washington Post

    • "It might be the most important number you don’t understand. The FICO score is the standard calculation used by mortgage lenders.”

      • The Wall Street Journal

I have long had the idea that there should be, and needs to be, a PM Profession score that provides a similar, in concept, rating and approach to knowing and improving one's rating. Hence, one day, the above kinds of things achieved within the Finance Industry by the FICO score could be very well achieved within the Project Management Professional by a PM Score.

Please feel free to drop me an email at [email protected] to let us know if you can make the conference call. I will send out an agenda and dial-in info. But again, for this first pre-step, let's seek to exhange information and ideas at a deeper level and see if we can establish a clear and common "shared vision" for all of this.

And, do any others want to join this call..?
