How did work for you? Any particular template used?

Yes you can use burndown charts in non-Agile projects. There's no particular template. A simple flip-chart or whiteboard is ok for large visible radiators, and if large is not mandatory, then various software, portals like sharepoint and even the old humble Excel can do the trick.

While the tool is certainly usable with any type of backlog of work (project or operations), stakeholders on traditional projects tend to prefer to see milestone or Gantt charts and performance tracking is done using methods such as EVM so I've not had occasion to use it yet.

If you had a set of activities with discretionary dependencies I could see it being useful in that context and then you could use a simple Excel chart or do it in a tool like JIRA.

I have. I used the charts provided in MS Project 2016. Worked as intended.
