Profile Pictures on the main page

I see the profile pictures on the main page changes constantly, some remains and some others are changes.

Anyone knows what parameter is used? just curiosity...

Many factors play a role like influence, how much you contribute, how much active and so on - I assume an algorithm controls all those combined.
