PMBOK Guide Paragraph 6.1.2.2 DATA ANALYSIS

It says in 6.1.2.2 (of version 6) that "alternatives analysis" can be used to determine which schedule methodology to use (or what combinations to use) on your project. And, it can tell you the duration of the waves needed in a rolling wave plan.

Can someone point me to this technique? Or give me a couple of hints so I can go find it?

The guide points to 9.2.2.5 for a definition, but I can't pick much of a techniques out of that paragraph.
Does anyone use it?

Alternatives analysis is a generic term so no, you haven't missed anything in the Guide or in alternative resources. They just mean that you'd identify alternatives, analyze the pros and cons of each and present them to the appropriate decision makers with the team's recommendation.
