Critical Chain Project Management is based on Theory of Constraints, a concept coined by Eliyahu M. Goldratt. Though I had heard of this term before, it was only after I read a title called 'Critical Chain' that I could reckon that it is a very unique concept. The techniques encouraged to manage project costs and overruns and buffer management are very different from the kind of project management I have worked with.

The question is, is Critical Chain just a theory that sounds very good, or does it have practical utilization? Has anyone here ever used Crical Chain to manage projects? I would like to know how effective and beneficial this theory is in the field.

Thanks.

Tom Welch: I just saw this post and cant believe it. I don't know your agenda but the implementations at Lucent of Critical Chain are very successful. We are using is as we speak. Do you really work for Lucent? I cant imagine why someone would have an agenda against CCPM.

And I was in the oil and gas industry so to say that CCPM only works in light manufacturing makes no sense. It is a project management methodology for any projects.

Do you consider Boeing to be light manufacturing? Please don't post unless you really know what you are talking about. You can delete your posts if you want to.

Sameer, following up from my reply to you of August 2007, we are seeing more and more organizations use CCPM with good results like Mark Boone describes. We have been using CCPM internally and quite frankly, due to the benefits we have been experiencing, our views of traditional project management are giving way to business value creation. We are far more concerned with optimizing business value of the project and of the project mix than we use to be with the traditional project perfomance measures of scope, time, and cost. Great post, I hope we hear and learn from others.

Hi Everybody.
Sameer Iyer, both... "a theory that sounds very good" AND "it have practical utilization". We started to apply this year in Maintenance Turnarounds. We had reduced periods, some up to 20% saller, and change the way people work in teams protecting the critical chain, seeking the "global optimum" rather than the "local optimum". As all implementation, training purchase of the idea is fully necessary. I recommend you start with a pilot (small project) or get help with a Consultant as we did here.We not yet used in multi project environment, but will be the next step.
