Sorry to be obvious, but first of all stay clear about what business intelligence is. Unfortunately for people like me that are working in the field from several years ago BI becomes a buzzword today and there are lot of confusion outside there. Returning to your point you can search into the internet about Teradata and IBM papers (some from Oracle too) where you can find lot of informaiton about that. Just to comment, because they are selling BI solutions you have to be aware of those data (i worked in both companies and I can say they make serious research but to be honest I have to pointed it). Thanks Dr. Sergio for your interesting point. I really appreciate it.
Well, what I am really looking for is an academic paper or white paper written by independent researcher or professional. It should be about lessons learned from IS projects. This is an assignment for my master's course in PM.
I mentioned that I preffered BI, because I took a course in BI and data analytics and it was enlightening. So, I've tried to look for papers regarding failures or lessons learned from BI implementation projects.
According to the course textbook "Business Intelligence - A Managerial Approach" by Turban, Sharda, Delen and King , BI is " an umbrella term that combines architectures, tools, databases, analutical tools, applications and methodologies... BI's major objective is to enable interactive access (sometimes in real) to data, to enable manipulation of data, and to give business managers and analysts the ability to conduct appropriate analysis."
HBR covers BI from time-to-time. The following article looks at increasing the odds of a BI investment succeeding so you might wish to contact the author directly.
The Standish Group has been surveying information systems projects for over fifteen years and produces their Chaos report every couple of years. I don't know whether they have started to segment it by type of technology project but it's a good place to get some general statistics.
I'd also suggest looking at PM Journal as they have done a few articles focused on mega-projects and those do include very large information systems initiatives.
