Think about the best boss you ever had. What made them the best?
I think my best boss was one of my first ones. She was no nonsense. She forced people to back up what they said. If you said you were doing something a certain way, she would ask you to show her to documentation that told you to do it that way. I learned to do the research, document everything and be ready to present at a moment's notice.
She would also back you up when needed. Knowing your boss has your back is still one of the measures I apply to every boss. Saving Changes...

My best boss was one of the first bosses early in my career. He believed in me, was supportive and fair and it is because of him that I start off on the right foot with my career.

My best boss defined my role very clearly and then not only guided me on that path but also gave me his evaluation about how I am going and what I need to improve. He actually influenced me rather than just pushing. He also helped me to groom my skills and career in addition to what was required as part of my job. Saving Changes...
My best boss was the one that was my mentor. I could not be more grateful for his candor, encouragement, was supportive of my interest in advancement and helped me to achieve it.
After I moved on he continued to take an interest in what I was doing and we remained good friends until he passed away in 2010.

My best boss gave me the autonomy to define my role, evolve it and provided (and continues to provide) support when I left the company.
That is rare to find such a boss Saving Changes...

The key thing to understand is: there are not "bad", "good", etc, etc boss. There are the boss that best fit to company culture. Is a matter of the company, not a matter of people. On the other side, you need at least two people to evaluate behavior. Saving Changes...

My most memorable boss supported my growth and allowed me the freedom to expand my horizons, and like Kiron's post, the autonomy to define and evolve my role. He was the epitome of a leader and taught me a great deal. Saving Changes...
