Heba -

This is from Douglas McGregor's great book on leadership titled "The Human Side of Enterprise" which was written more than fifty years ago - I would highly recommend you read it.

In short, Theory X managers believe that their staff are not generally trustworthy and need to be pushed or micro-managed to perform. Theory Y managers treat their staff like professionals and trust that they will behave that way.

This does not mean that a Theory Y manager won't act autocratically at times - if the situation demands they will adapt their style to fit the context.

Heba,

I second Kiron’s feedback ... I never heard of Theory Z, only X & Y.

McGregor’s Theory is one of the Motivational Theories among others like Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, David McCelland’s Theory of Needs, Herzberg’s Theory .... If you are studying for the PMP exam then I suggest you go through all the latter as you might find 1 or 2 questions on those in the exam as part of the HR Management.

Theory Y is like stated by Kiron.

Theory Z is the middle of X and Y, is from Japan (Dr. William Ouchi, Japan 1980) concerned with increasing employee loyalty offering job for life.
And result in increased productivity, satisfaction and morale.
