When classifying stakeholders in the stakeholder register; what is the main differences between Influence, power and impact? as I cannot differentiate between these nouns exactly. Is there a clear rule or guide to follow in this process.

I would view these as all meaning the extent to which a stakeholder can affect the success of your project. The other dimensions which you might consider are the level of their Interest and their Importance.

Kiron,

First, thank you very much for your reply.
Secondly, I have few questions:

1. Considering running a well site as a small project that takes around one month; is it right to consider the client foreman on location as a key stakeholder and my direct management as the sponsor?

2. As per the PMBOK there are few types of classifications for the stakeholders. Since all of them are interested in the success of this well site project, then I have to classify them according to their Influence/ impact or power/ influence. And to do so, I need to find a clear difference so I can apply this knowledge.

If the foreman is impacted by or can impact the project, then they are a stakeholder. Your "direct management" may or may not be the sponsor. Unless they are the one accountable for the project (not responsible, that would be the PM), then they are just senior management and/or a stakeholder if they are impacted by or can impact the project. As far a the grids go, Power/Interest Grid is probably the most common. And these are a little easier to differentiate than the other grids.

Hi Mahmoud,

In addition to Kiron and Sante

These questions will help you gauge the level of influence and impact of stakeholders have on the outcome of your project:

What are the responsibilities of the stakeholders?
What do stakeholders expect from the project and how to they benefit?
Are there any conflicting interests that the stakeholder may have with the project?
How committed is the stakeholder to the project? Is he/she willing to commit tangible resources?
What are the consequences of the not managing this stakeholder?
Can stakeholders influence others, who are the dominant stakeholders?
Are there any threats posed by stakeholders?

By getting answers to these questions, you’ll be able to determine the actual influence of stakeholders and manage them appropriately by using the Influence/Impact grid for stakeholder management.

It is qualitative measurement but if you start to quantify then you can notice the difference even clearer. The matrix tool is good and clear, but personally, I tend to complicate things sometimes and move it from qualitative to quantitative.

Power, you can infer it from the organization chart. Influence, you can not infer it from the organization chart. For example, the assistant of a director has lot of influence.

I would say there is no clear rule. when you begin you will see who the key influencers are. As you get into execution that will change, these are the ones who help you get things done. Iin the end you must make sure that the early key stakeholders, the ones who got the project approved are satisfied,
