To be set up as a scapegoat for failure. For example, by being put in charge of an important government project by executives who plan to sabotage it for personal reasons. The project is critical enough that its failure causes you to be dragged before a government committee to testify, with the likely result that you could be imprisoned and fined.
Eric - this sounds like a real nightmare, can anyone survive this? please share....

The worst nightmare for a Project Manager would be the inability to regroup the team with a mdified project plan after a budget or scope change in the middle of a project that has been ordered to continue on and make it work.

Being told that I had to cut my previously approved budget by 20%! We were already operating on the low end.

Jessica - that's a terrible situation because 20% is huge.

Question: Did they allow you to cut down the scope as well? Or to decrease the project timeline?
